1. Gender Stereotypes “Woman up”
2. Learning to discern the difference between culture and theology
3. Time to Woman Up :: YES Girl Project
1. Gender Stereotypes:
Have you heard the term “man up” before? What does it mean?
And more importantly what does that then say about women?
2. Learning to discern the difference between culture and theology:
We are all created equal and carry the same value, regardless of race, gender or socio-economic system we were born into – to believe otherwise is to miss the gospel message, this message of redemption, salvation, reconciliation. Jesus didn’t just die so we could go to heaven, He died to usher in a new kind of kingdom – one where we are no longer separated from God, and we are no longer separated from one another – this is the ministry of reconciliation.
Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Jesus saw the issues of race, class and gender 2000 years ago and a big part of his gospel message was to show us that these divisions no longer serve a purpose. That these hierarchies we have created in attempt to create order have instead perpetuated oppression and inequality. Despite Christ coming and showing us his upside down kingdom where the last will be first, and the first will be last – where the poor inherit the kingdom, we have continued to use Scripture to further oppress people. We have used Scripture as justification for our hatred and oppression of those that are different from us.
We continue to use Scripture to justify our continued war against the world’s largest oppressed people group: women.
Humanity has made SO MUCH PROGRESS over the past 2000 years, but it is fascinating to see that the big divisions in society over race, tribalism and gender are still plaguing us today and keeping the family of God divided, our attentions on arguing who gets a seat at the table rather than finally getting around to acknowledging that Jesus died so we ALL could sit at the table, together, interconnected. Christ came to rid us from the divisions and hierarchies that keep us apart and that keep certain groups above others – ie to restore humanity to reflect the image of God.
3. How are we going to “Woman Up”.
We are done accepting things as they are. We believe in a better society, a better way of being, a better outpouring of the gospel message.
……
Shifting gender norms is not an over-night thing. It unfortunately takes time. What we CAN do, is look at all the other factors and create strategies that focus on the issue as a whole and how to better support families and communities.
